The first place to start is always with people you already know. Do you have an attorney that handles other things for you? For example, do you have an Estate Attorney who helped you with preparing your Estate?
How about your CPA? Or any other Professional who's opinion you trust and value.
Do you know anyone that has been arrested for DUI? Did they hire an Attorney? Were they happy with the way their case went?
**A word of caution on asking a friend. Every DUI case is different, just as every person arrested for DUI is different. Your circumstances will not be the same as anyone else.
So when asking a friend who was arrested for DUI for a referral to an Attorney, do NOT rely solely on the results your friend experienced working with this Attorney. Their results will not be your results.
However, what you'll want to know we will be covering shortly when we get to the "Consultation" portion of this book.
The following are good resources you can use:
Contact your State Bar Association. A link for every State Bar Association in the United States can be found here:
Also, you can check out:
www.Avvo.com I like this site because people leave reviews. Also, they provide basic information about disciplinary actions against attorneys for violations of professional ethics.
www.Martindale.com Look at the Peer Review Ratings
www.FindLaw.com
Okay, so now you have some good places to start your search. My advice, do not waste a single second. I will say it a 100 times if I have to, Time Is Of The Essence!
Your DMV case may be up against the clock. That doesn't mean you should just willy nilly hire any old Criminal Defense Attorney.
Not at all. But the Internet can save you a lot of legwork in locating good Criminal Defense Attorneys. Use these resources to your advantage to help you save time.
A word of caution. The Internet can make our lives easy, especially when doing research. But, among the legitimate websites are sites that are anything but legitimate.
Specifically, I am referring to "referral websites". There are many sites that appear to be a resource for people searching for an Attorney. The problem is, many of these sites have call centers, and they call Attorneys all day long trying to get them to pay for a listing on these sites.
In most cases (as in almost every case) there is no screening process. It simply comes down to how much the Attorney will pay to be listed. Those that pay more, receive a better listing.
This of course says nothing about the type of Attorney they are, or how good they are at helping their clients.
These websites pay thousands, tens of thousands or more to Search Engine Optimization firms to make sure their website is ranked highly in the search engines (Google). They can afford to do that because they collect even more money from the Attorneys for their listing.
Also, they may use an official sounding name for their website. This is done in an attempt to disguise who they really are. As a general rule, I advise you stay away from "Referral Websites" when looking for a qualified Attorney to represent you.
